maybe you're thinking "what's the matter, this isn't THAT bad"
but you see you have to have it playing on loop while playing link's awakening for three hours

sofsh mentioned that earlier! now im curious what the first time was
someone in a discord server we're both in asked about its original source (which had been discussed in that same server almost a year ago)
i had one of these accursed things when i was a kid and this sound still pops up unbidden in my brain sometimes
oh yeah oops
so, on the SNES, nintendo released something called the super game boy, which let you play game boy games on the tv. some later games even had some extra code to set the palette and/or have a custom border (the game didn't take up the full screen).
later, a third party called datel decided to make the equivalent for the n64. it was called the gb hunter. sadly, they were very bad at it. they couldn't get sound emulation to work, so instead the whole time you were playing, it would do this loop, non stop, until it burrowed deep into your skull and stayed there for the rest of your life. i can only assume my parents fucking hated this thing
and today, i found out that it's not even an original composition! it's a short, incredibly compressed section of that's the way it is by jeroen tel (the infamous part begins at 5:33)
