follow your heart - pursue the actions and storylines that seem the most interesting, buy the outfits that seem the coolest, Numbers Go Up Metagame be damned. this game is all about Reading The Text, and said text gets increasingly excellent as it goes on, and all the sell prices and values and item costs and statlines are ultimately in service of Getting Access To More Text You Think You Might Be Interested In.

also, don't be afraid to make bad choices! especially if you're warned about them. a quarter of the fun of fallen london is taking risks that don't pay off and seeing your character fail miserably or pathetically or sometimes just not do a thing.

(... exception to the above is the enormous and devastating questline of Seeking Mister Eaten's Name - it is a questline along which some of the most tantalizing text lies, but it is also an exercise in how much you are willing to butcher your play experience for the promise of More Lore, or even just Because You Can Do It And You Came Too Far To Not. it's the kind of thing you should only embark on properly when you're good and ready, hopefully with an alt account. if you accidentally stumble into it you get a free item to give you a way out that immediately frees you from it and gets rid of most quest-relevant variables, plus gives you a special quality that marks you as 'Freed from the Name' which stops other players from involving you in their own Seeking)

If you’re having trouble with menaces (Wounds, Nightmares, Scandal, or Suspicion are getting close to maxing out at level 8), social actions are your friend; if you don’t personally know anyone who plays FL, there’s a dedicated channel in the official Discord for social action requests (you can also ask for people to send letters, which allow you to level up your stats very quickly).

On the other hand, you can always let your menaces max out just to see what happens as long as you don’t mind having to wait a little while before you can get back to what you were doing before. The one exception is Suspicion; maxing that out gets you a semi-permanent quality that makes future instances of max Suspicion increasingly costly. If you want to visit the max Suspicion location without acquiring that quality, follow the introductory Name Whispered in Darkness storyline that starts in Spite until you unlock The Flit, then get caught (fail the check) while trying to rob the Brass Embassy.
