Digital Culture and its Discontents

A place where video games get picked apart to examine the gooey Ideology inside

I got a free audible trial with several free credits and decided to go all in by getting the whole Lord of the Rings trilogy narrated by Andy Serkis. I’ve been slowly working through the books*, and just got done with “The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm.” Some notes:

  1. Andy Serkis is a fucking champion. Oh my god.

  2. I can definitely see a lot more clearly now how Tolkien’s works shaped modern fantasy as we understand and engage with it - both for good and bad.

  3. Speed-reading this series to win Accelerated Reader points in elementary school was a mistake! I missed so much!

*I’m reading the single-volume big chunker version of LOTR on my Kindle app, and so I’ve found it useful to go by Tolkien’s “this isn’t a trilogy, it’s six books and a bunch of appendices” model. I finished book one of Fellowship a hot minute ago and have been trucking through book two, I’ve got about five more hours left on the Fellowship audiobook, including three-ish Lothlorien chapters.
