Bigg
@Bigg

This is something I noticed even before I made the Porn Creator Batsignal Post and has more or less been confirmed by it: there's barely any people posting, like, porn of actual humans on this website. Very very few porn performers, very few people posting casual nudes. The overwhelming majority of pornographic material being posted here is drawn. @BoringKate noticed this same thing a few days ago (which, admittedly, was before several days of Twitter-exodus-fueled userbase growth): https://cohost.org/BoringKate/post/266975-if-cohost-is-so-good

I think there's a few reasons for this:

  • The site is still small potatoes in terms of potential exposure, making it an unsure bet to professional porn creators
  • No common consensus has been reached in terms of tags that differentiate photographic/video porn of real people versus drawn/animated porn
  • At this point the vast majority of the userbase are recent arrivals and most people who might start posting casual nudes need to at least feel out the vibe for a little bit first
  • Site terms of service are unclear as to how directly people who do in-person sex work can market themselves here; why invest in a platform that might kick you off the second you post the link to your Tryst profile? Similarly, no DMs means that SWers can't really conduct business on-site anyways
  • Had to edit this in cuz I can't believe I forgot to mention it: lack of video posting is obviously unattractive to performers who might want to post teaser clips
  • Another edit: strippers and burlesque performers, who want to build regional followings of people who can attend in-person shows, aren't going to find that here yet (again, limited userbase)
  • I've seen very little Cohost Evangelism targeted at live porn creators, actors, streamers, or sex workers. Most of the advocacy I've seen (and this is true of myself as well) has been directed towards people who make drawn content

I think that last point is something those of us who might know or subscribe to live porn creators etc could do better about - whether it's talking the site up over on Twitter (for as long as the site is extant, at least) or mentioning it in comments on OnlyFans/Fansly posts or wherever else you can think of, I think it'd be good to reach out and let folks know that this place exists. And I promise I'm not just saying that because I want to see more tits & hole on my feed

in reply to @Bigg's post:

One thing you may or may not have missed is that a lot of the people posting casual nudes (myself included) are doing so from private accounts. It's the only real privacy option atm that still allows some level of interaction, since you can't lock shares on a post.

I'm more concerned with publicly-posted nudes in this post, since their visible presence (or rather, their visible absence) has the potential to speak implicitly towards what (and who) the site is "for".

(This is true of any kind of content, of course. I'd also like to maybe try and get some journalists coming over here, since I feel like that's another area is notably lacking in.)

Yeah, I tried doing public nudes on twitter not so long ago and the fact that it was by far my most successful content on there made it more stressful. It was supposed to just be a fun side thing to take pressure off feeling like I was failing when I wasn't able to draw. That's why I made a priv for it here.

I've shared a few public nudes so far but yeah overall I think the issue is that while the site is rapidly growing a lot of folks who do live porn are gonna want to go where they can reliably get customers and subscribers. I saw someone mention earlier that cohost is looking at allowing direct subscriptions on here and if that happens I can imagine it being more appealing to advertise live porn on here.

for me illustrated porn is a fun hobby, and I'm enjoying being here to find other artists and just post bits and pieces.

I'm also a swer with an onlyfans but the feel of cohost so far doesn't feel worthwhile for posting that kind of thing. Partially like you mentioned because the user base is still small, but mostly because it just feels like a chill space to vibe and share stuff casually, rather than somewhere you can hustle for your content.

I've been posting all of mine in the tags most relevant, or else #trans girl, #transgirl, or #dickgirl. I think it'll be a self-solving problem given time, right? Like, people aren't really searching "#nudes" to find, well, nudes. They want to see Bespoke Nudes. #bodypaint, just for a ~crazy~ out of pocket example. 👀

I am not a nudes poster so it may be wildly different, but I've had discussions with other erotic artist friends about how after a few rounds of porn bans, it's been hard to feel comfortable posting anywhere that is not enthusiastically, gleefully pro-smut; there's a chilling effect that comes with having been told again and again that general-use sites are only tolerating erotic art, that a ban could come any time, and that a large number of people may not be upset by the content but would not consider it any real loss if it disappeared.

Real-life porn is treated like just the presence of it is actively dangerous. Even most sites that allow erotic art don't allow adult performers. The content they can make is strictly limited even on porn sites. Having monetization tools in place would help, but I think if this factor is in play at all it might just take time for people to feel out Cohost and get comfortable posting here. The rules allow it, but I know I would be nervous as fuck about the potential reception after the nonstop, increasingly loud shrieking of influential people who seem to think posting real sex stuff is Ew, Weird at best and somehow predatory at worst. "You can post nudes here! It's allowed :)" and "SHOW US YOUR TITS >:3c" are way different vibes and it's probably worth cultivating the latter.

I do think letting people know they're welcome and wanted will help a lot, but this also feels like new territory in some ways. I think this may be the only non-porn site that's opened since the Tumblr bullshit that actually has an ideological interest in welcoming porn creators (which is also a very different thing from welcoming fanartists to post horny art of our blorbos, even if there's crossover and should be solidarity).

I wonder if something like an open call for input from adult creators would help? I'm not sure what the staff's bandwidth is like for something like that right now (and possibly they've already done this), but a common theme I've seen in a lot of Cohost wariness is that everyone is really, really used to sites not giving a shit what users want and trying to pick whichever one looks like it will deteriorate most slowly when the owners get enough users to focus exclusively on their real customers. I think this is such an expected pattern at this point that it's possible for people to assume it'll happen even when they know and believe in what Cohost is supposed to be; it would be legitimately groundbreaking for a site to be like, "Hey, what would keep you safe and help you make money?" and have that actually result in features rather than "Hmm yes, we're listening and learning and uh we'll see if any of this is doable without changing the site in any noticeable way."
