Anonymous User asked:

How would you play Disgaea? I've heard a few people talk highly about it but I'm not sure if it's something that needs to be emulated, or if it's on Steam/Itch, and I've been too embarrassed to ask without anonymity haha

NO PROBLEM I'VE GOT YOU COVERED

there are 8 mainline disgaea games, including disgaeas 1-7 and disgaea dimension 2 which is a sequel to the first game (released 10 years later). any of them are good to start with except for dd2 since it was an anniversary project and kinda suffers in quality. 6 was so bad that i skipped it entirely. 3 is largely inaccessible because they have not rereleased it yet (except on vita) so unless you have a ps3, it's better to just watch the story on youtube.

so really there's 5 games to pick from! all of the following are on steam:

  • disgaea 1: originally on ps2, later on psp and ds with additional content, then ported to pc with everything, and then "remastered" as disgaea complete for ps4 and switch. the remaster sucks. disgaea pc is probably your best bet, sitting at $4 due to the winter sale going on right now. (edit: @YoshiKyon pointed out in the comments that there's performance issues with the steam release, so definitely let that factor into your purchasing decision...!)
  • disgaea 2: also a ps2 game, later on psp with extra stuff. this one is also $4 on steam right now.
  • disgaea 4: originally on ps3, later on vita with lots of extra stuff, now on switch, ps4 AND steam as disgaea 4 complete+. this one is currently $14! what a steal!! i'm partial to playing disgaea on consoles so i would recommend ps4/switch, but if you prefer pc it's definitely cheaper there.
  • disgaea 5: this one was originally on ps4, then came out on switch and pc with all the extra stuff included. it's currently $10 on steam. again, i'd recommend the switch version but pc should be just fine too!
  • disgaea 7: this is the latest release!!!!! it's on ps4, ps5, switch, and pc. pricewise it's about the same across the board since it came out in english last october. i played on ps4 when it came out in japan, then played the english version on switch. both were great.

ok now how to narrow it down

imo you should pick your starting place based on whatever characters/premise vibe with you the most. if you're sure you're gonna play all the games, i recommend going in release order since it's hard to return to older disgaeas where there's less quality of life features.

if you want to play any single disgaea just to see what it's like in there, i recommend 4. it is the best one. it's a great story, the gameplay/system holds up a lot better than disgaea 1, it's got hd sprites rather than 3d models (i dont like the 3d as much!) and it's affordable on lots of platforms!

if you like tactical RPGs already and somehow never played disgaea before, i think 5 has the best gameplay. it FEELS GREAT to play. 7 feels good too but it's still kind of recovering from how badly they fucked up in 6. the only downside of 5 is that the story is the weakest of the set. i still care about the characters but i think the others from this list are a lot better.

if you want to splurge on the most modern disgaea with a great story and cast, highly recommend 7. it is my next favorite after 4. i still think the 3d models are a little goofy but they're getting their footing with it... it was a lot better than i expected going in.... i love the cast, i love the writing. this is the only disgaea that doesn't have tenpei sato's music, but i still liked the songs! there's a few bangers in there. notably different vibe from the rest though, and i think the cutscenes suffer from losing the character acting in favor of just having vn style, but there's also more illustrations because of that and those are great. ok that's enough about 7, i really liked 7...

disgaea 1 is SUPER beloved by fans to this day, so i think it's still completely valid to start here. if you're used to playing older games you'll have a good time with it. if you don't enjoy tactical rpgs and grinding and whatever i think you will suffer. the story is great and iconic. laharl etna and flonne are extremely fun. there's a lot of people who think disgaea will never be this good again and i disagree with them but i also see where they're coming from. 1 rules.

i've said practically nothing about disgaea 2 but i REALLY LOVE THIS GAME!!! i don't know if i can recommend it as your first disgaea because the things i like about it are overshadowed by how much i love 4 instead. 2 has a really wonderful love story. to my memory there's some bits in the localization that i'm sure they would do differently today (namely taro's nickname lmao) and tink is a freak (/pos????) so i'm worried you'll get a weird impression if you start here but like... fuck, the story's great. i love adell, i love rozalin, i love disgaea 2.

this is the end, i've said too much

i hope this post can guide you. please play disgaea 4

in reply to @nomnomnami's post:

oh my god im so sorry about 6........... 7 is amazing, you can UNDO THROWS?!?!???!? it's too much power!!!!!!! but yeah theres a lot more enemy variety and you don't have to fight the same boss over and over again like in 5 and 6. or at least, when you do refight them it's different enough that it doesnt feel like a chore... oh and of course they went back to normal stats so you can actually read them. there's a ton of skill variety too :) ahh i want to play more, i'm still in the early postgame in 7!!!

oh sweet, i think i'm actually going to get d7 now! i am also a huge disgaea fan who bounced right off 6. i legit started skipping story after the "beat a boss and lose anyway" for like 10 chapters and it turned into wonky auto-battler. thought it was over

the auto battle shit was so offensive to me!!!!!!!!! they kept it in 7 BUT it uses a resource now so you can't rely on it, AND they made a programming minigame out of it (the director for this one was the lead programmer on 5 lol) so honestly all my issues were solved... they're geniuses. SOOO glad they course-corrected after 6.

chiming in to say that Dis1 PC has some serious performance issues now! there are mods and such aimed at fixing it, but it's hit-or-miss as to whether they actually fix the problems, and it's enough to make the game unplayable (the most widespread problem is completely missing sprites, replaced by giant black boxes)
(i really wish they would fix it, I wanted to go back and play it a few weeks ago and it's just basically gone, the mods didn't work for me ;_; )

i'm thinking the reason they haven't rereleased it yet is because they want to redo the graphics since they were the main point of contention when it came out, but going through all that effort would be really expensive... BUT YEAH I LOVE ALMAZ TOO!!! i always try to recommend 3 to people who i know would enjoy mao, because if you like mao there's no way disgaea 3 isn't your favorite disgaea. what a fun game.

Since this question exists, might as well add some details (and ask questions);

-For Disgaea 1... Mobile version is somehow the ultimate experience?? Disgaea Complete+ feels more complete than any of the other "Complete" title.
It has a lot of QoL adjustements so it's the most beginner-friendly one. You can accelerate actions to 2x/4x/8x, put auto battle if you aren't a big fan of grinding (ik some people see it as heresy, but it's always a plus and clearly not whatever D6 was) and you can unlock the cheat shop as a bill; all of this without Disgaea 5's mistake of giving you characters that capture the map before the tutorial if you want.
Being on phone also makes things really smooth, easy to launch and it only takes 1 GB iirc.

D4 might have the best plot (close with 1) and D5 the best gameplay, but I really think this version of D1 is the ultimate entry for how accessible it is (especially with D1 PC issues).

-Disgaea 5 PC is infamous for lacking content and I'm not sure they fixed it.
The opening also doesn't work somehow?
I think the way they put the additional characters is kinda bad too; don't know if it's the same on console.

-Disgaea 2 is good but doesn't represent the Disgaea vibe until the postgame/optional bits imo. It's still a mustplay but idk if it's the best entry point

As for the questions:

-Which game do you think 7 is closest to?
I'm not a fan of the 3D and cutting-cost presentation, but the story and characters seemed really good after the fiasco of D5/6.

Going by trailers and minor spoilers, the "allergic to friendship" reminded me a lot of D1, seems to have a plot a bit like 2; and i heard it pushes the "demons don't do good" to D3 level.

-What's your opinion on other connected Nippon Ichi games? Disgaea Infinite, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, ZHP, La Pucelle, etc.
Feels like people always put MK at the top or bottom of their ranking.

woah i've never tried d1 mobile even though i kept hearing that it exists... since i'd never seen it myself i always assumed it wasn't a very good port... good to know that it's surprisingly solid!!

my take on 7 is that it has the spirit of 5 but the quality of 4. it can't overtake 4 in my heart, but there's some particular things about the story that i think are super well done and i love how much the cast cares for each other!! everyone is nice in this game... oh there's a really cute bit if you recruit laharl, where he and fuji are totally on the same level, it's so great!! but fuji's empathy allergy has wayyyy different context from laharl's that i think is more compelling so it's not just a rehash or anything.

I LOVE DISGAEA INFINITE AND I WISH THEY MADE MORE GAMES LIKE IT!!!!! that game was another inspo for BAD END THEATER honestly because of the flowcharts and swapping perspective stuff. i love zhp and makai kingdom, and i never finished la pucelle or phantom brave sadly. phantom brave's final boss is too fuckin strong........

You will look stupid at me, but I play disgaea 4 on the phone. It was 11 thousand HUF (I look in Hungarian currency, if I have to translate it into USD, then 30.63 usd) I like the game, but I find it a bit expensive 😅
Edit: 11 thousand 990 HUF so $33.38
