someone made a joke about "making web pages in assembly" and now i find myself explaining what Gopher was to more than one person
if you were born after the berlin wall fell, well, gopher was a service a bit like ftp and a bit like using a web browser. you could list directories, you could search, and you could download text files and binary files. it predates the world wide web

I am actually running a gopher server (though it also does HTTP/HTML translation for benefit of, well, tbh most people nowadays after Mozilla axed the old Firefox extension systems) right now for a small IRC community. there are also a couple different services you can access over gopher, though mostly they're just gateways or mirrors of web services
