do you want to work for the greater boston public transit system? my department, Customer Technology, is looking to hire several software engineers.
if you aren't near Boston, that's not a problem, I'm two time zones away and it's fine, although there are a handful of states in which we're not able to hire people for some reason. I'm not sure how anything works if you're outside the US.
working in the public sector has been really nice. there are occasionally unique challenges, but the fact that the goal is to make things better rather than to make the most money is great. especially in my department, where our whole deal is “we work for riders”: we maintain rider-facing tools like the website and the digital signs across the system, and we also maintain internal tools that help operations staff run better service and provide better information to riders.
we write a ton of Elixir, a lot of TypeScript with React, and a bit of Python, so if you already know those then that's great, but if you don't then that's not a dealbreaker, I came in with decent Python and JS experience but not much React and a mere crumb of TypeScript and Elixir. several of our projects are open source. the job posting says two years of professional experience is the minimum, but I got hired with less professional experience than that and more academic and informal experience.
I've had a great time working here for the last year and a half, and if you're looking for a tech job I'd absolutely recommend you check it out.
