ok particularly fascinating is the oboes mentioned by the OP… they are Not Oboes.
https://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa=Main.Item&itemid=676&acctid=6700 here’s oboe 0, which seems to be a shawm… so is oboe 1.
https://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa=Main.Item&itemid=688&acctid=6700 here’s oboe 2 seems to be a… crum horn? i’ve… never heard of that sort of thing!
https://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa=Main.Item&itemid=690&acctid=6700 oboe 3 is… mayyybe another shawm? i’m honestly not sure, but baroque is definitely not the word!
on the bright side, the bassoon IS one!
I’ve asked the music teacher sister about the crum horn, and will report back if she has anything interesting to add!
Sister has come through!!
First of all, "Baroque" is actually correct! (ish?) I suspect the instruments are not original to the time period, but instruments that were used IN that period.
Shawms are precursors to oboes, they look a bit like vuvuzelas, but have double-reeds, similar to modern oboes, bassoons, and bagpipes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shawm
but then it gets interesting! Crum horns are ALSO precursors to oboes, they have a curved bottom, no flared bell, and an internal reed like a bagpipe. I would say it looks like a tiki torch that had an unfortunate accident, and sounds a bit like 8-bit video game music! You can hear and see an example here: https://youtu.be/jTNg_qVManA
And then, there's the baroque bassoon's themselves. which apparently sometimes look like a dragon! (The bassoon is her instrument, so this was vital information for me to include, and I hope it brings you joy!)
