I absolutely thought my puzzle was unsolvable without this allowance. It's stated in a parenthetical and my brain parsed it backwards. -
S Is The Same Altitude As 'a', E Is The Same Altitude As 'z'.
It explicitly says this. I explicitly wrote code that has it 1 below/above.
