keep seeing headlines about the switch 2, people saying shit like "oh it's gonna have 12 gigs of super fast ram and play games at 4k 60 with ray tracing!!!!!!!"
and like... no it wont lmao
nintendo has famously and consistently lagged behind any and all competition by a like a decade. We'll be lucky if the new switch still has four gigs of ram. we'll be lucky if it can maintain 30 fps at any resolution. i dont for a second believe it's going to be more than a spec bumped switch 1, and it's going to cost 500-600 united states dollars

On one hand, I really don't think a console's raw performance makes much of a difference when it comes to it being able to run good games. When I still used my switch, I never once thought "ah yeah if only this ran at 4k", though I used it almost exclusively in handheld mode. For all of my misgivings, I think nintendo's approach to hardware is actually the more correct one.

On the other hand, I stopped using my switch because fuck nintendo, and regardless of what they do people will still buy them hand over fist. My only hope is that they continue their tradition of sloppy security, so some years down the line I can buy a used one for $100 and hack it. Or just emulate it.

that's been my experience with the switch as well. I'm more than happy to play at lower framerates and resolutions if the games are fun (i do that for pc gaming already) but nintendo has worked very hard to shed all good will with the way they mercilessly swing their hammer of justice down on anyone who says "hey maybe we should be able to preserve some of these games before they're lost to time forever"

Nintendo has generally been a dick in every direction. People wanting to play old games, people wanting to draw pokemon characters, people wanting to look at the switch the wrong way, whatever.

Thankfully, it turns out there's an embarrassment of wealth in terms of video games to play out there, new and old.

yeah no yeah, anyone expecting the switch 2 to have really strong specs hasn't been paying attention; nintendo stopped caring about the hardware race after the Gamecube, and they're especially not gonna care now when game consoles are just PCs with bespoke cases and operating systems now
