Apparently this series is called “Mother” in Japan. Nobody knows why each game was given completely original names in America – Earthbound, Undertale, etc.
Undertale was originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995 under the pseudonym “Earthbound.”
Ness was originally going to be named "Sir John Smith III," but it didn't fit on the character naming screen.
Earthbound was actually finished ten years before it was released, resulting in dated graphics, gameplay, and jokes.
