Very weird dynamics in Canadian politics right now where both Liberal and NDP leadership are taking victory laps over pharmacare and talking about how they’re planning to expand the program and meanwhile nominally liberal-aligned columnists like Dale Smith are shitting all over the legislation.

Even now with a bill in hand these liberal columnists are talking about it like it’s an NDP fever dream, and saying the only way this’ll work is if the Feds push all the cost off on the provinces and the premiers would have to be mad to accept it. Feels like a combination of buying their own hype about the NDP being “unserious” to the point where they can’t admit that the NDP and Liberals hashed out a pretty good bill between them, and being legitimately upset that negotiations didn’t collapse and trigger a feeding frenzy election.

I’m sure there’s also some resentment about having another minority government, and about the power-sharing agreement between the NDP and Liberals, broadly speaking, working. Hard to push the “natural governing party” line in circumstances like this…
