I dunno -- I would absolutely believe that Evangelion was written with the post-war occupation of Japan in mind.

Watch mecha anime! It has:

  • nationalist polemics against article 9
  • pacifist polemics in favor of article 9
  • deep meditations on embodiment
  • the overman king gainer theme song
  • a surprising number of celebrations of queerness
  • that one show that’s all about how young people need to be straight and have more babies it’s really bad and not even funny bad don’t bother
  • merciless critiques of capitalism, fascism, and imperialism
  • eye-rollingly bad apologia for capitalism, fascism, and imperialism
  • careful consideration of ecology and its intersection with politics and human existence
  • the Gundam hammer

Bonus! It’s almost impossible to tell which categories a given show fits in before watching it! Particularly if you’re consulting English language sources because most are still written by “wow cool robot” people from the “war is bad” gundam meme.

Oh, yeah, on that front, 110%.

…and in light of the fact that the economic crash in Japan started in 1990 (I was under the impression it started later than that, for some reason), that all being extended into a broader critique of the contemporary geopolitical configuration seems much more likely, hm.
