I see a lot of people on the left mock claims like this but shit is legit and you're probably caught up in some of it and have been for awhile

[edit 2] Guess I'll address this in the main post since I've seen people posting about it: Bringing up the subject of foreign propaganda attacking the US is not a statement that US propaganda doesn't exist and isn't a serious problem. You're preaching to the choir about the abuses of the US government. Doesn't mean foreign propaganda is a non-issue or imaginary. And talking about foreign propaganda doesn't mean I'm saying the US doesn't have its own purely self-created problems. Please don't hit this conversation with a "So you hate waffles?" That's a whole new sentence. Arguing against things I never said makes you look silly. Don't do that. Thanks.

It’s a good post and makes some really good points; especially about how easy social media is to manipulate. Mainstream media is easy to manipulate too, but at least it’s not pretending to be a mass of Real Ordinary People.

I’d add to the advice that if your community still has real local news, support them as much as you can. Here in Halifax for example we’ve got the Examiner. Appreciating just how much is going on in your own backyard makes it easier to remember the scope and scale of the real world and not get drawn into over simplified “nothing matters” attitudes.

in reply to @amydentata's post:

I always think of having gotten that "hey you interacted with some Russian propaganda" notice on Tumblr a few years back and it was on some of the weirdest posts, like, oh

Yeah IDK. This sort of thing gets dunked on a lot but I do think it is possible to hold in one's mind "US liberals wave 'Russian disinformation' around as a Boogeyman to discredit the left" AND "the Russian state has a vested interest in fomenting conflict online" at the same time.

Good read, thank you for sharing

I’m somewhat curious how many “well meaning but hysterical liberals who call everything Russian bots” are in fact Russian propagandists. It’s gotta be nonzero right? Like that’s such an obvious way to get people to not take this seriously.
