I found this fascinating graph from the New York Times (which I trust as a source of facts despite their editorial line). I want to write a longer thing at some point about the enduring problem of Israeli complacency, but this actually captures a lot of it. For most of my life, the ongoing violence has been a constant threat to Palestinians and an occasional inconvenience to Israelis. Whatever else happens next—and I'm not optimistic—that has changed.

(Not acknowledged by this chart is the divide between civilians and soldiers. Many of those "Palestinian" deaths were people who, like, lived in the same apartment building as a Hamas or Islamic Jihad fighter, whereas the Israeli deaths before this week had almost all been uniformed soldiers. This is definitely the Times trying to whitewash things in Israel's favor, but in terms of Israeli public opinion I don't think it matters much. Because of the way the draft works, almost every Jewish Israeli has served in active duty, so widespread deaths of soldiers would probably have a similar effect there as widespread deaths of civilians in a less militarized state.)
