from the truly wonderful glass collection in the Romano-Germanic museum in Cologne... ancient hand-blown flip-flop bottles
like ok. it's the 2nd century and you've travelled to Colonia Agrippina, military stronghold and thriving merchant city, producer of some of the empire's finest ceramics and glassware. you stop and get some oysters, shipped in from Britannia, at a little street stall, then wander down a row of craftsmen's workshops. you need something really cool to take home for Lucida. look at these fanciful bottles. birds, pigs, creatures from the makers' dreams. none of them quite right though, until – oh hell yes.
flip-flops.
