musical outline for WILT of last may. this one's a tragedy and as such gets kinda fucked up right away
Dumbass!: man who has fucked up his relationship a million times comes home to partner after doing it again. he begins self-flagellating in an effort to make his partner forgive him. the partner refuses, saying this is the final straw and the man needs to leave
If You Leave Me I'll Kill Myself: i feel like this part is pretty straightforward. the man immediately changes his strategy, threatening suicide to try and guilt trip his partner into taking him back. the partner, however, holds their ground and kicks him out on his ass
In Too Deep/Dogtooth: this part's a little muddy but i imagine the songs being a couple of recurring pieces illustrating the man's subsequent ups and downs. at first he's in shock, bc he didn't expect his now-ex-partner was actually gonna be through with him. he tries to rebuild his mess of a life, but fails repeatedly. some different lines of dogtooth are used to illustrate the more specific details, while in too deep acts as the refrain to emphasize either his confidence or lack thereof, depending on the point in the sequence. maybe it changes between major and minor key with those ups and downs.
in the end, the man is finally beaten down by the mess he's made for himself, and does end up taking his life
A Ghost Story: not the most tasteful way of depicting the direct aftermath of a suicide, but yes, this one gets spun into establishing that our protagonist comes back as a ghost and begins haunting his ex
O.P.P.: lmao. so the partner has started seeing someone else, which makes our shitty ghost jealous. and so. yeah
Left Behind: while O.P.P. was more of a self-righteous proclamation, this song is where the angst at his ex's "betrayal" really sets in
Woo Hah!!: the ex and their new flame are getting married!!!! naturally, they'll have an unexpected guest in their haunting spirit. this is the big party song that the couple gets to enjoy, before....
Tekka: technically this would be more like part of the score, but nevertheless this is where our protag beetlejuices up the place and freaks everybody out
I'll Never Need More Than This: regardless of the wedding debacle, the newlyweds affirm their devotion to one another, while it's hinted that the ghost may be starting to come to terms with the reality of their affection for one another
Computers/Scroll of Sorrow: i feel like this should somehow get set up earlier in the story, probably during the In Too Deep/Dogtooth sequence, but i don't have any clear ideas as to how. the ghost's living..... friend? relative? for the sake of this i'm gonna say it's his sister, bc that's easy for me. but it could really be anyone who was close to him in particular. so anyway she discovers like a secret social media account or something that reveals some hidden depth to the dead man's life, and she copies all that stuff onto a usb drive. like maybe records of him being really depressed, or that there was someone or something in his life that he did really care about but lost sight of over time. this is maybe a little dear evan hansen-y, but it's just something to make him seem more human, and for us to empathize with him while still understanding that he's a Bad Dude. Computers and Scroll are combined bc they both have talk of online stuff. tom cruise optional but recommended
His World: the protagonist gets brought up to his ex and we get like a split-stage number where the sister and the ex are both remembering him, with the sister's memories of course being more favorable
Oh My Fucking God: as a result of this recollection moment, the ex and their spouse end up figuring out who it is that's haunting them. how? with a fucking.... ouija board or something, idk. the song is hardly about anything. but anyways they establish some form of rough contact with the guy and they're PISSED. understandably
No Flex Zone: the spouse tells the ghost to FUCK OFF TO HELL! the ex agrees but is more sad about the whole situation than angry
classic j dies: yeah man. he goes to fucking hell.
Final Warning: but actually before that, he meets with his sister again and she tells him about the stuff she found and how he wasn't such a bad guy after all and she wants to have a more proper celebration of his life and invite his ex. he, having by now learned his lesson and prepared for his punishment, corrects her about that and says he WAS a bad dude, and she should just let his ex be. she says she will, and they say their goodbyes
Prozac: the married couple are seen hosting another party, but it's clear there's a darkness now present among them. this is partying to get "something" off their minds, rather than just for fun. the sister appears at the party and makes some small talk where they do the "i know you from somewhere!" "oh? no, i don't think so..." dance. in the final scene, the party has wrapped up with everybody either gone or passed out from getting fucked up. the sister sneaks into the hosts' bedroom and places the usb drive that has all the stuff that she found on the secret social account
notes - i know the sister doesn't really get a lot of presence or development...... i'm just working within the limitations but it could be nice if we at least got a better sense of her relationship with her brother to understand her actions. maybe there could be some exposition on their childhood during the scenes where she finds his secret stuff and where they meet before he passes on to hell. idk. hi again btw
