okay here's a term I made up to explain why sometimes it's okay to insult your friends and sometimes it isn't.

a 'trust fall' is when you go limp and fall to the ground, and someone else is supposed to catch you. it's a game people play to show off how much they trust each other. at any time, someone could just... not catch you, and you'd smack your head on the ground, owie (please only play this game outside on soft dirt thanks).

so, a 'social trust fall' is when you do this verbally. I say something rude, and you catch me by playing along.

okay so here's an example: I say to you "gosh, a transfem; I bet you have matching striped socks". if nobody answers me, then I'm just being rude, I'm making a stereotyping assumption about you. It makes me look like a jerk.

but if you answer that with "actually, I prefer unmatched socks" or something like that, then that changes the context. my original statement doesn't look like an insult anymore, because you're playing along. you've saved me from looking like an asshole, hence, you've "caught" me.

when people exchange 'friendly insults' this is what they're doing. this is how it actually sort of makes sense. hope this helps!
