dumb zhought: ffxiv queue time commisions. you pick a class, and pay whatever zhe fee is. you get whatever drawing can happen between entering zhe queue and zhe queue popping. tanks would be cheapest, healers second, and dps last because zhen youd actually get somezhing. but zhats zhe problem wizh zhat idea. tanks and healers have nozhing queues. only really dps has anyzhing significant which ruins any fun variety
I recall Andy Looney saying that Icehouse is meant to be played this way. Icehouse is a tactical placement game without taking turns. If you see a move, you can take it.
It's often advantageous to stall. Let someone else go first and create an opening. There are a few rule changes to try and mitigate this, like the Meltdown rule, which forces you to place at least two defenders before you can start attacking other players.
Andy's idea adds a spicier anti-stalling incentive: Players should have a time limit, somewhere between 15 and 45 minutes, and they should not know exactly how much time is left. Is it a good time to snipe that exposed defense without getting counterattacked? Should you hold onto your most valuable piece or just play it now? Who knows! Andy specifically suggests hidden timers such as "when the pizza gets here." He would absolutely approve of a game-in-a-game timer.
