Parameters

  • My brain has been mush for years, so nothing that requires being smart or remembering anything
  • I have a love-hate relationship, but mostly hate, with games that require being really good at twitch reflexes etc. I am not going to get good, probably. But every now and again I'll fall in love with a game that has a challenging basic gameplay loop anyway

Deckbuilders

I love Slay the Spire and Griftlands. Essential to the appeal of both for me is that they move reasonably quickly and do not require extensive management of cards etc. You are rewarded for making good choices from a small number of options over and over again. This works really well for me. Something like Steamworld Quest, which has full deck management, does not work as well for me because it's easy to get overwhelmed. Games like Wildfrost and Monster Train fall in the middle ground because there are just a few too many things happening on screen and sometimes that fucks me up b/c no attention span.

Turn-Based

Harebrained Schemes's Battletech is an all-time favorite. It works better for me than X-Com style games do, partly because it's just not as deep or punishing TBH. I also enjoyed HBS's Shadowrun games, although not quite as much. (I am looking forward to Lamplighters League)

I would love more games that are in the sort of lightweight to mediumweight tactics space which aren't necessarily locked to a grid or require doing a bunch of damage math in my head.

Shooty games and action RPG etc.

I haven't played like a big shiny shoot game in a while (I think Control is probably the last one? Not counting Mechwarrior 5.) Anything that's visually fun and doesn't have super rancid vibes is okay?

If I want to try Yakuza, and I've never played it before, which is the one to try?

My understanding of Yakuza is as follows:

  • Yakuza 0-6: the Kiryu Saga (with upcoming spinoff game The Man Who Erased His Name). Brawler style.
  • Yakuza 7 / Like A Dragon: New protagonist, and change to turn-based RPG party combat instead of brawler. Knowing 0-6 probably good for understanding some of what's going on but it's told through the new guy's eyes without bogging you down with having to know that stuff, so if you're going to jump in the middle this is probably a good spot.
  • Judgement + Lost Judgement: brawler, spinoff with different protagonist, only tangentially touches the main series, might not get any more games?
  • Ishin - historical spinoff game with characters from the main series standing in for figures. Although not based on the main story, probably best enjoyed having exposure to most of the characters in 0-6 for the "hey I know that character model".

From some cozy games I've recommended that seem to fit your general parameters:

  • Littlewood - cozy town builder, run around collecting resources, build a town.
  • Calico - magical cat cafe sim. contains cats that you can pet. contains things that are not cats but can also be pet.
  • Stranded Sails: Explorers of the Cursed Islands - pretty chill, combat is pretty light.
  • Slime Rancher - I love this game. I like cute things.
  • Motor Town: Behind the Wheel - it's GTA without the GT; it's just auto. No combat, just drive around and do random tasks for points to improve cars to drive around, with some light home decor on the side. Early access.

Other games:

  • Grim Dawn - Wherever action RPGs are mentioned, I must bring it up.
  • The Ascent - cyberpunk ARPG that needs more love.
  • Stray - 3d platformer where you play a kitty, wot was super popular last summer.

On the deckbuilder side of things, you should take a peek at Dicey Dungeon! It's a very streamlined game that doesn't overwhelm you with choices, but ends up having compelling strategy and the myriad new character classes it presents you with keeps things fresh if you get bored of one. That said, it definitely isn't as deep as Slay the Spire, but as a person who has dumped hundreds of hours into Spire, I still enjoyed Dicey Dungeon plenty - it's especially good to pick up for a quick session.

I'd also be remiss if I didn't simply mention the huge selection of StS mods - there's tons of 'em and many are fantastic. Downfall in particular is a full-featured expansion with a 5th hero character and "Downfall" mode, fighting as one of 7 villain characters in the Spire against the heroes, and very much worth checking out!

Seconding the other person who recommended Dicey Dungeons, and you might also like Luck be a Landlord, which is by far the breeziest deckbuilder I’ve ever played; the entire gameplay loop is just “spin the slot machine, pick one of three symbols to add to the machine, repeat”. I also enjoy playing the digital version of Dominion, though you’ll want friends to play against to get the most out of it.
