bluesky may be an op, poorly designed, and on course to become Mastodon 2, but at least it's not Mastodon 1, which is a complete fucking nightmare

edit: please note I am not taking a side in the above conflict, in part because it is completely incomprehensible to me, and in part because I am unqualified to speak on many of the subjects at hand; as with every conflict there are at least two sides. I am taking a side against the idea of "federated social media."

as much as I utterly detest tech companies, I would probably trust a Mastodon instance run by, idk, Apple, or my ISP, a whole lot more than bungus.fungus. side note, if anyone does actually know of any masto instances run by people who's Actual Job it is to run said instance please lmk

I like the idea of Mastodon a lot, and to be perfectly honest if I cared more about being on social media I would 100% be there and put up with its many issues. imo way more shit needs to be federated. centralization sucks.

The thing that I keep thinking about in this situation is how completely impossible it is to understand from the outside. Like, even if I were a tech.lgbt user, I don't know how I'd begin to make any sense of this or whether anything I'd read was accurate or not.

I read it three times and even as someone who operates a masto instance I have absolutely no idea who's mad at who or why and it seems like there's some kind of real complaint here but it's buried under a ton of... stuff that I can't parse for the life of me?

every time i see mastodon drama it just reinforces my feeling that fediverse boosters have completely failed to learn from history

they took all the petty tyranny of old-timey webmasters and forum admins, gave them buttons they could use to block entire websites, and then mixed in all the hyperbolic fervor of modern social media politics-posting

and without full text search you can't really find the post in question and just have to raw dog describe it from memory.

like as much as full text search is a pathology it's necessary for knowing people aren't like. just fighting over misremembering something.

what gets me most about this is like. the reason it's incomprehensible is that the tech.lgbt people are doing an impossible piece of diplomacy in the middle of a fight that doesn't really exist outside of a spiral of "proportionate response".

and somehow tech.lgbt accidentally figured out the way out: burn a lot of labor to make something everyone just tunes out.

masto the social organism really is just US Politics, ~imperializing the ideaspace of everyone who participates, huh.

I only saw this for like five minutes today and I already want to delete my fediverse account and burn everything to the ground.

I understand that sometimes you need a full server block. But I seriously do not give a shit about people's personal beef. Let me follow someone even if the owner is a dick. Let me follow someone even if the owner of my instance is a dick. I don't give a shit about your drama. I just want to follow cool people, not deal with the childish drama between server admins. That's their problem to solve, not mine.

IIRC one of Bluesky's biggest promises is data portability, which feels like it's the potential solution to defederation drama, but I haven't dug in enough to know for sure.

This doesn't make Bluesky itself a solution, but the prioritization of being able to up and move with minimum effort and not losing anything on your end seems vital.

Do you want a full-on instance with other people and paid moderators? I think the closest you can get to that today is hachyderm.

If you're ok with a Mastodon instance for yourself + maybe a few friends that you moderate/federate yourself but the underlying instance is managed by someone else, I found a few places that offer it:

https://masto.host/pricing/
https://toot.io/pricing.html
https://www.thunderhost.com/ (vibe was weird when I contacted them)
https://hosting.ilja.space/start (Akkoma instead of Mastodon, but will still get you where you wanna go)

prior to facebook and twitter and google turning all telecommunications into an unreadable for-profit content slurry basically everything online was some schmuck's hobby project website or forum. loads of it sucked in its own ways but whatever is wrong with Mastodon to make everyone on it sound like the horrible union of a leftist subreddit and a NFT is definitely something specific to Mastodon
