Last night, Megumi Ogata (VA for Shinji/Evangelion, etc) won Best Voice Actress at the 16th Seiyu Awards

In the speech, Ogata said,

Are you sure I should be getting Best Voice Actress? 70% of the roles I've done are boys and I don't really consider myself an actress. There is so much talk about being 'genderless' nowadays and there are voice actors in the industry who have come out [as queer].
And like myself, there are people out there who go on about their daily lives mostly not thinking of themselves as women. Compared to actors who must show their faces on media, I think it's the voice actors who can advocate to go beyond the genders and put aside labels of 'male actors' and 'actresses.' I don't care about 'male' or 'female,' and for the next award show, maybe you can just make it 2 awards without the labels. I think that could lead to more possibilities.
In the JP anime industry, actresses of my age don't get to play the protagonists. To be in such an industry, I thought that my award acceptance can be a positive influence, so I've decided to accept it. I'm sorry for sounding arrogant. I truly am happy for this.

Note:
I've translated the speech from the source article in the QRT (news.livedoor.com/article/detail…)

This is just an additional trivia about Megumi Ogata, but Ogata played Haruka Tenoh/Sailor Uranus in the original Japanese Sailor Moon TV series (1993 - 1997) in addition to playing major young male characters in JP anime.

PS. There seems to be a lot of nonbinary people who are also learning or interested in learning Japanese sharing/liking the thread so I’ll link an article I wrote to explain nonbinary in Japanese. I hope it will help fellow nonbinary people out there :)
