the "parents should monitor their kids on the internet (so that we don't have to moderate our behaviour in all-ages areas of the internet)" stuff is always a tough sell for me because, like, i was a trans teenager on the internet who was closeted from my parents. my parents monitoring my internet would have been very bad for me because either i get outed to them or i have to supress my queerness even ON the internet, the only space i had for the longest time where i could be openly queer. i don't get why people who normally would say "we ALL have to respect kids, it takes a village to raise one" are suddenly retreating into the safety of The Nuclear Family when it comes to the fact that kids exist in the same space as them online. like, cmon guys. we all know that parents don't always have their kids' best interests in mind, or that their conception of "best interests" is fucked. this isn't hard
