I don’t have a super hot take here but after a lot of people mentioned it I tried Mastodon. Even after the confusing federated stuff I think the big thing for me is

It’s not new, different, or interesting.

And for some people that’s fine. No judgement. Some people just want Twitter but not by Twitter.

I personally find the Twitter format off putting. The focus on bite sized posts, the endless scrolling, smushing in a thousand hashtags so you can Build That Brand.

I like that cohost is different. I like the mix of stuff I see on here. Single images, quick posts, long form fiction. It’s wonderful. And then tags are just fun things at the bottom.

I know a lot of folks want there to be The One Social Network but I personally think we’re all better off with separate sites for separate users and interests. Then we can all select the experience we want. And isn’t that the best of all worlds?
