I haven't actually done much on this game tonight, but I have aggressively culled some scope, which feels MWAH CHEF KISS SO GOOD. Unasking hard problems by doing the obvious thing because of imminent time constraints, imagine that.
Case in point: I could implement an aiming arc so the player knows exactly where their "water grenade" will land; or I could make it a simple line trace instead of a projectile, contextualize it as a magic spell, and now we're worldbuilding baby, the player isn't just a thief, she's an acolyte wizard thief.
Producers love me, writers hate me.
I got a pretty good amount of stuff done on this game today. The biggest thing was light-based visibility, with full support for dynamic shadow-casting lights. Plus I restored a bunch of stealth gameplay features from NEON STRUCT like pickpocketing, takedowns, dragging bodies, and AIs noticing other AIs' bodies.
I had hoped to get around to doing some level design today, but I'm feeling good about my progress on mechanics, at least.
Not a lot of progress yesterday or today, but it's starting to look like a Thief.
Between some late hours at my day job this week, and spending all evening on Wednesday at AEW Dynamite/Rampage, I haven't had a lot of time for this jam. But I'm not giving up! I'm definitely gonna miss the deadline, but I think I can finish making Something Pretty Good by Sunday night. I'm streamlining the player's magic powers even further: instead of 4 powers, there's one context-sensitive power. It's basically a frob/interact prompt but with a finite resource and infinite reach.
I got a whole lot of stuff done on this game jam today:
- Multipurpose magic spell
- Animated hands!
- Health and mana pickups
- Enemy AI state indicators
- Other things that aren't very interesting to talk about!
- Oh also it's got a name now, it's called Li'l Taffer
I didn't finish today, either, but I got a bunch more stuff done. And more importantly, I'm ✨having fun making a video game✨.
It's pretty much feature complete, I just need to build all the rooms. I'll probably wrap it up tomorrow. Or maybe I'll add a couple more AI types, I dunno. I'm having fun.
Never question my commitment to the bit where every game I make has a frobbable toilet in it.
Also don't mind the guard, he had a rough night and he's sleeping it off.
