commie tankie chink bitch
im an adult but this is a (mostly) sfw page (as in, might discuss nsfw topics)
i had a classmate who outright stated she was heterophobic lol (on a side note, i dont endorse any sort of intolerance, including heterophobia, but it was meant to be a joke and it was funny
also you know why same sex marriage is banned in china? because when they tried to ban polygamy they wrote 'marriage must be between one man and one woman or something like that i dont study law.' the emphasis was on 'one.' and now nobody ever bothered to change it, i guess
i would say that gay rights aint that widely discussed in china as it is in the west, and many ppl especially the older generation fail to consider that gay ppl even exist. for example, a lot of schools is strictly against dating at school and get mad when biys and girls get even a little close to each other. but gay and lesbian relationships fly completely under the radar.
but overall i wouldn't say the entire society is as tolerant as the west. for example from what i saw on the internet, some people make their kids drink medicine to try to turn them straight (kinda like pray the gay away huh) idk really how many ppl do it in real life. also ive seen some really good ups on bilibili, who are truly accepting and tolerating gays, still call gay ppl 'gay' and straight ppl 'normal.'
but then again, what even does that prove? its pointless to compare whatever stuff you wanna compare without considering the history and particular situations of each country, which differ from each country to another. i find it incredibly frustrating when some ppl just go like 'lol youre homophobic~~' like, its like you get a headstart on a race and turn back to laugh at your opponent. two things wrong about it are that 1 you shouldn't feel smug cuz you got a headstart and 2 we ain't opponents.
wow that was an absolute mess but i pat myself on the back because this time i didnt write a whole ass long post and discard the entire thing; idk how many times ive done it. if theres anything anyone wants me to clarify feel free to ask it, my thoughts are messy and im terrible at writing anything coherent
thanks for your personal experience! and yeah, it's pointless to measure homophobia/transphobia in a way that isn't contextualized within the unique circumstances of a country and in the case of china and other global south countries, without taking into account the influence of colonization and colonial homophobia/transphobia too
there is also the fact that liberal NGOs and other western-backed organizations will often act as covert agents for imperialism while parading LGBT rights as part of their portfolio- this is pinkwashing and only serves to deceive the masses and encourages & creates homophobia from those who recognize the west as an existential threat.
china is definitely slower when it comes to being on the up and up when it comes to legislative recognition and social acceptance of LGBTs, compared to a country like cuba which is probably one of the most forwards-thinking in terms of queer liberation. vietnam is also moving in that direction. in the future i would like to see the PRC (and also DPRK) go along the same path, though it will probably look much different from cuba's way- as usual for genuine liberation, it has to originate from the people and not from some outsider trying to impose their own framework onto a situation that doesn't fit it
