idk i know this place has flaws but i do think among the options of:

  • jack dorsey's racism dial
  • please cw this discussion of your oppression for sadposting :(, btw you're defederated over my breakup
  • and the everlasting never-dying unkillable cockroach of tumblr

this site is probably better than the alternatives. cohost ain't perfect but i actually like existing here? it's a strange concept, i know.

still might make a tumblr tho, idk

i also feel like i've seen a lot of bad-faith criticism of this site as an excuse to not consider other options, like

  • "this site isn't sustainable, it's bleeding money" so is every other social media site? cohost is just honest about it, and frankly they have a better path to sustainability than twitter ever had.
  • "the owners are too personal with the site trying to use it normally, it's parasocial" is either the mysterious figure of jack dorsey or your fediverse instance getting defederated over your admin's breakup really any better?
  • "the owners aren't real leftists because they pay themselves a living wage, you're only a real leftist if you're poor" this is not a real critique

criticizing the site ran by actual leftists who care about what they're doing so you have an excuse to stick to, again, Jack Dorsey's fucking racism dial because the leftists are imperfect is just... weird. it feels like making excuses to stick to your status quo rather than having actual critique.

it's definitely weirdo behavior. i find it so strange how people have built up so much seemingly personal stake in the websites made by cryptofash billionaires to the point that they will not only dislike the (objectively more moral) "competition", but they will use all their time on said competitor to talk about how much better the shitty blue apps are. i feel like all this "discourse" is, to me, a clear sign of just HOW twitter-brained the last few years have made people that they see other places as an objective threat to Their Chosen Posting Format.

it's one thing to choose to not acknowledge other social medias that you don't use, but it's another one to be on an objectively MORE evil social media and actively choose to say that Mine Is Better Than Yours. why not just... use the one you like, and don't use the one you don't like?

personally, i don't really care why someone chooses or doesn't choose to use a website. it's not my business, and that knowledge does not enrich my experience or give me "something to think about". i've placed my roots where i choose, and i mind my business. but when you choose to become a soldier for the shitty blue apps, i can't help but give a bit of pause lol.
