I think the thing that pisses me off most about the internet nowadays is that I've been working on myself for years to understand more and be a better person and internet culture as a whole hasn't progressed spiritually past being weird, antisocial teenagers

  • You're not supposed to be angry and sad all the time
  • Growing up means learning how to control your emotions and know what is and isn't worth your time
  • If something offends you, investigate inside yourself as to why and whether it's worth getting mad at a stranger online about

I did a lot to grow as a person and then I got sucked into some internet communities that dragged me back quite a bit. Been trying to recover from that for awhile now. It can be rough online if an unhealthy space gets hooks into your worst compulsive behaviors.

I wonder to what extent this is because they keep making new teenagers and they keep arriving in adult spaces. Large spaces can never really outgrow that dynamic, can they? (OK Facebook can by becoming terminally uncool and repelling teens)

I think this is just a result of Eternal September: we see a lot of overly emotional people on the internet because a lot of them are either relatively young or don't have a lot of experience socializing on the internet. It's a natural part of human development to be overwhelmed by emotions when you don't have a few years of experience with them, and I wonder how many of the people driving a lot of the drama are actually just teenagers or 20-somethings who haven't learned how to let things go.
