i watched ralph bakshi's lord of the rings last night instead of going to bed at a regular time and it's a thoroughly impressive piece of work for 1978 and even today, but it's not good. make no mistake, as a piece of film cinema it could only ever be called bad, however there's just so many good performances and technical aspects (especially in the realm of rotoscoped animation) to it and i was actually engaged for the whole runtime despite it being over 2 hours and paced absolutely horribly.
it is cited as inspiring a lot of peter jackson's adaption and i can see a lot of it in those movies. idk if it's to the effect of the medium, but it did make me want to read the original books which is something the "modern" adaptation has never made me want to do, so maybe that's something
