silly billy musings about my art style
there's nothing objectively wrong with the art style i've developed over the past couple of years and it still really feels like "my" art, but there's been a lot of illustrations ive been trying to work on this year that i just simply. wasn't super into or just didn't finish because drawing in a semi-realism always means i feel like i sacrifice part of my undersketch in order to fit how i'm used to drawing, which. has felt a bit stifling.
i defo have a "style" and its something that's quite clear and amalgamated from things i like (that fuckin black upper lip is pretty obvious where a lot of my inspiration in art comes from i think), but what i've always been envious of, and something i rediscovered recently is the game The End which i played i think either senior year of high school or freshman year of college. i've also been looking at a bunch of the illustrations of Gary Baseman's and Kyle Ferrin's character design inspiration and there's very distinct and appealing parts about their work that i want to be able to emulate.
i have really specific linework, in that i only use deadline/single weight brushes in my work and have done so for the past several years. i really like lineart! i think this probably comes from how i was mainly inspired by anime and manga in my early years where most linework in those things don't have much lineweight variation, additionally i only ever really did traditional inking with micron pens which are also famous for often being single weight. i really like this part about my work and i've been trying to work with simulated "pen" brushes and they're neat and cool but i don't think they often feel as "clean" as i want my lineart to be. so i guess the deadline stays for right now even as i play around with the shapes of body parts and whatnot right now.
i dunno what i'm really talking about but i'm like... excited??? to try to draw differently. Yoshitaka Amano was right. change how you draw like every 5 years and you'll be happier
