there used to be a couple of pedestrian crossings here in Cambridge (UK) that had buttons that weren't placebos on timed lights, and instead they'd flip the attached road lights to red within ten seconds of pressing the button. With no cooldown.

Pressing the buttons on a lift is rude because you're inconveniencing other human beings. Hindering motor vehicles is okay because cars aren't people.
