happy birthday mahadevi
i recently acquired two books featuring her work. one is a poetry selection surrounding the literary movement she was a part of (the return of sarasvati) that's out of print but i miraculously found it used for $3. the other is a translation of her piece about all the animals she had in her life (Mera Parivaar/My family). i've also read her short novel sketches of my past.
she has a very beautiful style that can be attributed to a meticulous tendency to write down her observations about animals that she's had since childhood. she goes past her "self" and enters the "self" of another living being as if they were never two separate selves at all. her poetry is also very mysteriously written and fills me with a sense of longing.
also she was a feminist, anti-colonialist and an animal rights activist. nice.
