Going through my faved tweets while it is still possible to do so and found an article about defaultfile.name, which to my delight is still up.

To summarize, it is a page that scrapes youtube for videos whose title is whatever default file name cameras use for recorded video (DSC_1234, MOV123 etc.). It is a great source for weird found footage, uploaded to youtube for unknown reasons, sometimes nearly a decade ago, viewcounts in the single digits. It is youtube from the days before the algorithm kicked into high gear.

Like this: Timelapse video of... some kind of bread (?) being prepared by wrapping it around a wet wooden roller. You can make out the first word on the apron worn by the person preparing it, could that be a clue as to what this is? The roller is burned on one end, so maybe they bake it by putting the roller upright over a fire. It is not shown. What food is this? Where is this happening?

Or a walkthrough of an empty apartment. Seems like the person filming it is being shown a potential place to rent and they want to document it. The letting agent sometimes comes into view briefly but the person filming seem to try their best not to capture them on the video. The power outlets look American. Where is this apartment? Where is the smoke detector whose battery badly needs replacing? Why is there a single folding chair there?

Or you might see a nice looking fish. No mystery here I think.

Since this is being shared a bit by people now (thank you!) here are a few other clips I like.

The shakiest footage ever of one of those spinny attractions at a carnival. I love how the view keeps on returning to the bottom in order to catch the people riding it, and thus always end up filming this one guy standing on the platform, constantly staring us, the viewers, down. 50 views, 8 years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9p4fQD42so

This guy would step on any spider to protect the country, no matter how big the spider is. There is some punchline about his brother being a spider (?), playing video games thus making him unsuitable to run a country. 7 views, 9 years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzLodqVF2S4
