im listening to some music on my phone through a dumb lightning to 3.5mm adapter using the same headphones i use at my computer, with the same lossless audio files, and im noticing things that just definitely were not audible in the same way on my computer. really did not expect this one but i guess it kinda makes sense?

the dumb adapter has a DAC in it, which was meant for music. your pc in comparison probably has whatever cheap DAC was easy to add to the motherboard
yeah, the sound circuitry thrown in on most PCs isn't very high quality, it's actually one of the selling points of spending more on a motherboard. There isn't enough isolation of the digital components from the analog, creating a higher noise floor, that's what I hear most often. Apple's always been a lot better about that (which I suppose you should expect from the iPod company), though unfortunately that meant that when the digital signals started getting too strong (high powered display, really sensitive camera) for the headphone jack to meet their quality standards, they just took it out. And admittedly replaced it with a surprisingly high quality dongle.
