hello denizens of the cyberscape! what the fuck do you do when your boss approaches you to write an opinion piece for one of the biggest papers in the state on how the governor's policies have forced me to uproot my life? i already said i'd do it, but it just now occurs to me that i have Never Written For A General Audience Before. i've written school papers but those are written to a High School Specification that isn't really like any other kind of writing.

Your boss is gonna help you as an editor, right?

You're a rookie, your boss knows that and a halfway-decent boss should have an idea of what their role will be in this request they gave you. Do your best, it won't be perfect, ask them to review and provide feedback.

If your boss doesn't support you in this, that's not a boss worth having (but a common occurrence).

The biggest difference between school and The Real World is that as a student you're expected to do everything yourself, as a Learning Experience. In the real world, you are expected to ask for and receive support. That's a huge qualitative change that no one tells you and you're just expected to kinda figure out. Ask for help. That's it. Ask for help.

I recommend:

  1. find the style guide used by the paper. This will help you use language and punctuation in ways that will look appropriate for the paper it's to be published in. Or if you choose otherwise, it'll be by choice for effect, not by accident or mistake.

  2. minimize "connective" words. You don't need to justify your flow from topic to topic in your paragraphs, just say the information and the analysis of it that you're writing to share.

You've got this!
