It's so wild because Patreon really wants me, as a creator, to use the app and encourage my patrons to use the app. They want the app to become a social hub by pushing premieres and chat. They know that almost all creators get new patrons from outside links (like twitter/reddit/twitch) and not from browsing Patreon and they're desperate to change that.

And why? Why care about an app at all? Well because shareholders think it's important. They think Patreon could become a replacement for Twitter. They think it's a winning strategy.

So they want the app to succeed. But they DON'T want to spend money to make it a better app NOR do they want to eat the cost of doing business on iOS. Because why spend money when you can just pretend you're the little guy without options (those options being lose out on some money by paying the "apple tax" or just not allow people to subscribe through the app).

That's what I surmised from it pretty quickly after joining their discord and seeing what they were answering (and ignoring). Almost every bit of feedback or suggestion to alternatives had them repeat, word for word, the response that "the Patreon iOS app is the number one platform for fan engagement" which I don't think is true and also doesn't matter because "engagement" doesn't mean "success" or income or anything meaningfully measurable. Folks have pressed them all day about providing data to back this claim up but they have not said a word.

yeah, i kinda fell for the line at first because Apple is certainly a greater evil in the world and this did seem like something that would hurt Patreon. but i was missing the context of them doing away with every other kind of billing, and when i saw that later i put the pieces together and realized-- this is just an excuse. like there was a real fire here but they're using it as a smokescreen to do what they've always wanted, the fuckin' jerks. disgusting! may they reap what they sow

A long time ago, somebody told me that the most important thing that you can do running a one-employee business is to give yourself a title that strongly suggests that you're just a cog in a larger machine. The statement definitely has a "sorry, but my boss insisted. I can affect a funny accent and let you talk to him, if you want to complain..." vibe.
