@julian

so, a week after patreon abruptly permabanned hundreds of fetish accounts (with no warning & despite not violating patreon's tos) i'm now seeing a prominent 18+ artist getting his patreon frozen with no explanation at all as to what triggered it, or directive as to what he can do to recover his primary source of income. (link to tweet)

when the alarms started ringing on patreon's crackdown against fetish art, this is the slippery slope we were warning you about. dovegraveyard's work is not particularly niche in terms of content - he does primarily m/m pornography, rendered in watercolor. it is nothing more 'extreme' than you might find in any off-the-rack adult magazine. the fetishists and sex workers were, as they always are, the canaries in the coal mine, and in absence of patreon providing any real explanation as to why they have spontaneously frozen this account i seriously believe the noose is about to tighten further on all adult content, not just the kink.

not trying to be an alarmist or a doomer, but if you have a patreon you should be setting up some type of mailing list to keep in contact with your supporters, today. if your account ends up being targeted, it will be magnitudes harder to reorganize on a new platform without some way to inform subscribers what happened and where they can find you.

finally, if you are so inclined, i highly recommend pledging to dove as he attempts to rebuild on subscribestar. his art seriously kicks ass and he is just the latest in a long string of artists i deeply care about who have been casualties of patreon's dogshit staff shooting itself in the foot to please payment processors.

in reply to @julian's post:

unftly this part: 'Your Contributions are not obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, violent, harassing, libelous, slanderous, or otherwise objectionable (as determined by us)' is a big red flag for me. saying that 'we don't allow obscenity, and we get to decide what is obscene' comes off as a classic conservative cover-your-ass line even if the staff of comradery don't intend it that way ): shame bc otherwise this website did seem promising

as of the last conversation my partner had with co-op leadership, comradery does NOT support adult work. our understanding is the hope is to support it in the future if they can find a payment processor to work with that won't yank support from the entire site or force them to selectively ban people, but I don't think there's been much movement on that front yet, unfortunately. this may have changed, I think it's been about a year since she checked in on that issue, but at that time things were still on hold.

urghhh that sucks. really looking forward to eggbux being implemented on this site next yr so collectively we can get a tip jar option checking both the 'porn friendly' and 'fash unfriendly' boxes

That's another reason shit like this is awful. People often respond to frustrations over this with, "well just find another platform, it's a free market."

The problem is when there's one dominant platform that takes a lot of resources to run, you often turn into the place people go when they get kicked out of the mainstream site. Reddit has Voat, Twitch has Odyssey, etc. So you get people forced to share a space with people who are hostile or otherwise just uneasy being around.

you should be setting up some type of mailing list to keep in contact with your supporters

could you expand on this a bit? the concept of "mailing list" is an SEO crater

being honest i'm not sure i understand what you mean by SEO crater, but when i say mailing list i'm not referring to physical snail mail - having an email list/newsletter via a service like buttondown or substack is so that you are able to directly send people updates via email while being less tethered to a single website. it's not perfect but it creates an extra layer of safety net so that if, for example, your account on one site was spontaneously frozen and you were not allowed to post there, you could still get in touch with your followers to say 'hello i am on xyz site now' instead of being totally cut off. it's also a useful way to contact fans without asking them to create an account on anything i.e. if you're a tattoo artist who wants to put out a bulletin about open bookings

I mean that it's difficult to search for any kind of honest suggestion or recommendation as to what service or website makes sense to use, because advertising companies have gamed the search results so whatever paid service gets in the way

but yeah, "buttondown or substack" is the answer I wanted, thanks!

with all due respect, i'm not in control of what website some trans gay stranger from the netherlands jumped to. i included the link because i would feel weird making a big talky post about my anger at an artist losing his paycheck overnight without also sharing ways to help him.

twitter is, charitably speaking, being sucked to death by several million fascist deer ticks. i'm asking you this as a genuine question, not to be a dick or be confrontational - by using twitter, am i falling into the same category as people on subscribestar, client or creator? i don't like that subscribestar allows far right extremists to make money, but there's fascists on patreon too. twitter paid out 20 thousand dollars to andrew tate this year for ad revenue, red scare is making 55 grand a month on patreon. i don't even rely on twitter to pay bills, it's just where some of my friends still hang out.

i, personally, do not maintain a creator account on subscribestar or patreon because i would rather hold out until i can develop a platform on cohost, which i have more trust in - but not everyone has that luxury. there aren't really good, secure options available for adult artists to jump on at present, that's part of why i am so frustrated and angry.

ok. i simply cannot agree with the idea that sending a person money on subscribestar or having a twitter account is a fascist act, and i think we are probably better off not continuing this conversation further

From what I hear, basically every few months MasterCard will come to Patreon with a list of specific accounts and say, "shut these down or we're turning off credit card payments." Patreon will sometimes argue on behalf of a user if there's something in there that they think makes NO sense, but they know that they host a lot of content that is explicitly in violation of their agreement with MasterCard, so they tend to just capitulate.

So if it ever feels like Patreon is just shutting down accounts at random - they are! It's just whatever some exec found while trolling for porn & disliked the look of. It also explains why Patreon is just telling the creator to sit on his heels for a few months - they don't really want to shut him down, and are hoping this whole thing will just blow over without anyone noticing.

From what I know Patreon didn't ban fetish accounts, they banned ABDL artists. Which stands for Adult Baby/Diaper Lover. They have a lot of overlap but the former isn't a fetish because some people regress back to being a baby mentally to cope with trauma and the horrors of daily life
