I completely disagree! The ambiguity of that is extremely core to the themes of the episode (feeling like you fucked something up but have no idea what it was or how to fix it, and the results of that shattering every relationship you'd previously trusted without warning) and giving a concrete answer would deflate the episode much in the same way as answering "what was the Midnight entity" or "what's the Doctor's name"
I totally agree with that and think it works great standalone! I just think they might still go and reveal more. Maybe I'm not giving rtd enough credit or maybe I've just been put in that mindset from all the other hints and mysteries being dropped all season
With so many works insisting on explaining every little thing, I love it when one trusts itself enough to leave so much open.

for real, like, the best episodes are the ones where the more you think about it the less sense it makes. like when Moffat kept writing time loop bullshit (affectionate)
