oh oh oh some lore bits!
meqou has an earth-styled framed painting of "Opening Above ████", a still-life from the perspective of someone looking up at a great hole in the cave-city's roof. the disaster occurred due to the shallow nature of the city and increased pollution propagating through the rock and killing off supportive mycelium.
the disaster took three eyes to remediate, mostly to tend to the wounded and repair damaged structures, but was eventually patched with a groundsmind-managed superstructure that is carefully designed to expand as the city grows.
the ceiling-side of the superstructure is patterned in a similar fashion to the roof as it existed before, with one notable feature: the silhouette of velzie's eye bound by a 'tie', the double-X structure you see throughout meqou's room. it's symbolic of their victory as a cave city; "not even velzie can break the ties that bind".
ever since, the symbol has been criticised by more traditional vaznian scholars as being a temptation of velzie's wrath, but it remains, perhaps out of spite, moreso out of pride
