GOOD morning I am yearning for old 2010-2015 minecraft and how things were simpler (sometimes better but shh) in this game

Like, we were having little funny updates every month that added cookies and wolves (and bug fixes) and nothing else and it was the good life y'know?

Also hot take but the pre-1.14 texture AND artstyle were better, bite me

And also I feel like mods were just, more unique and interesting back then? Nowadays we have Create, which is amazing, but that's kind of it tbh?

Maybe it's just rose tainted glasses

i feel like a lot of the stuff bolted on to modern minecraft, to me, ends up detracting from the experience because it never iterates on what currently exists, just adds onto the pile of Stuff There Is. and personally i think that's bad, because the potion system fucking BLOWS!!! like there is no reason it needs to be as complicated as it is and use such particular items that have no other purpose! can you believe pufferfish makes WATERBREATHING POTIONS, when EATING THEM POISONS YOU? it's bad design full stop

also speaking of mods: i feel it was much more wild west because of distribution platforms. like a lot of the time mod usage was word of mouth, you found an interesting mod and shared it with friends or on social media (or a youtuber did a review and it was usually pretty varied), but now bc distro platforms prioritise showing you the most popular with a focus on modpacks, there appears to be less choice, when i can tell you with certainty that there are hundreds of mods you've never heard of if you just set your search settings to most recently updated on Curseforge.

in short: current minecraft imo is bad because its systems are vapid and were never iterated upon post-implementation, minecraft modding scene seems empty bc distribution platforms like Curseforge prioritise most-seen and most-subscribed over unique and new mods

...also use Fabric it's far more user-friendly than Forge. lots of the unique and weird stuff comes out of Fabric nowadays

Tbh there's not nearly as much untrod ground re: modding now as there is back then, it feels? Like, at this point, for a mod to stand out it can't just rely entirely on technical accomplishments, which is the main thing a number of Big Mods back in the day (RedPower/Project red, Buildcraft, etc) had going for them

⭐I totally agree. I find the pixelly programmer art style much more charming than the new style. I think the new style is too "smear-ey" and noisy for a 16x16 texture size. I definitely prefer versions 1.12 and before, and yeah maybe it's just nostalgia too but I reckon pre-1.13 mods were much more interesting.

I think you're right. Everything past 1.8 or whenever they added hunger and running and whatnot... it just feels different. Minecraft fundamentally changed past that and with every single new massive update I'm more and more lost as to what everything new does (not that I have kept up closely with things but still, it's all a little overwhelming). I think wearing rose tinted glasses is fine when talking about games we used to love but don't anymore for a variety of reasons.

It just feels like the direction of the game is going isn't, the best? I don't think it's objectively bad it's just, it doesn't feel right to what I'm used of when I think "minecraft", idk

The whole new "deep dark" and "warden" things just feel way out of place in vanilla minecraft honestly

Yeah I agree, the game's just not for me anymore. I stopped playing it a while back, never got to grips with most of the new stuff and that trend's not going to change anytime soon. Maybe I'll go back to an old beta for a few hours to play some old minecraft, at least it's good that they make older versions accessible via the launcher.

Honestly spot on, they're adding too much "LOOK AT THIS BIG THING! WOW!" things for the big promo events and end up barely touching old stuff that still needs fixing or need some more meat on its bones like cauldrons (why aren't the bedrock functionalities not in normal minecraft??)

right? why aren't we brewing out of cauldrons...

there's another thought: villager job tables. they're cool and all but like, the only ones that have any function are the smithing table, grindstone, and stonecutter (which is honestly kind of bizarre, it's a table saw? minecraft's tech level is magical-medieval, it sticks out like a sore thumb).

honestly it feels like they're just Adding Stuff To Keep People Interested and that's... bad. that's not good. the game should be living its best life but it's on life support
