why does deep space nine keep running what is essentially a cardassian operating system. give that thing to the right nerd and they'd have Linux running on it in a weekend
since this post did well, here's some cool/good additions people made:
yet another request has come in "to just rip it out and start again" and once again o'brien finds himself explaining how the federation is occupying the station, but "occupying with a lower case o," and can't just go around replacing things with federation tech.
"First up, the Bajorans can ask us to leave at any time. Anything we bring, we might have to take home with us" and before he can be interrupted, he answers the question he knows is coming "Yes yes, it'll be different if they join the federation, but you know as well as I do that things won't change overnight."
"Which brings me to my second point." obrien begins tapping the table with an outstretched finger. "It might be all cardassian to you and me, but the Bajorans know it like the back of their hand. Remember, we're the guests here! You wouldn't just turn up to someone's house and strip out the plumbing now would you?"
the rant continues on, including the various federation export restrictions he's been fighting for the last six months, service contracts for the equipment that the bajorans can't afford, a complete lack of trained personnel in both federation and cardassian repair, only to let you in on a secret
"that's why the coffee pot in ops is battery powered."
