the problem with having a fairly efficient bioplastic synthesis process is that you have a bunch of crude oil that nobody knows what to do with. the enjyn have so much of it that you don't even need to drill wells - their planet is basically a giant tepid bog, it just seeps out sometimes and is really annoying. whatever they don't use (most of it) is off to be processed into bioplast by funny algae

might be useful as a pharmaceutical precursor source - crude oil has a lot of different molecular structures (aromatic rings, etc) that're difficult to synthesize from non-petroleum sources

Not sure how it would compare to having biosynthesis, though - it really depends on the relative scalability of the biosynthesis methods compared to petrochemical ones

with enough space and enough time, anything's possible! but that's an interesting point... i think if anything they might be harvested from nebulae and deeper down in gas giants, if at all. the microcosm is basically post-scarcity so it doesn't matter if something operates "at a loss", more that it produces efficiently
