there seems to be a large number of autistic people both here and like elsewhere online who are like "i stopped working and im way happier now"

ok that's cool but like how do you get the money to survive? this always confuses me a ton bc disability in the us is completely inaccessible to most and pays like nothing anyway, where are u all getting the money? genuine question bc looking for jobs is killing me

Spouse, maybe? I'm a writer and even the best-selling trade published writers don't make enough for a living wage. The only people who can write full time are exceedingly lucky Stephen King-types and those with a spouse who make enough money to support 2+ people with a single income.

I, too, would love to just. Not have to work. But it's really, really, really difficult to do so in the US without a spouse or family paying for all of your stuff. It sucks!

yeahhh, but even then, a spouse would need to be making a serious amount of money to be able to support two people, not to mention the guilt of being entirely financially reliant on them

it's pretty ass :v which is also why i'm so confused about it! something like 80% of autistic people in the US don't work, do all these people just have a family/spouse willing to pay for all their expenses indefinitely?

Well, you know my answer. Though I never did stop working, I just started working for myself I guess. Can't say it went swimmingly of course, but it's the happiest I've ever been while still earning money
