So, Citra's canary version finally added Vulkan support to the PC version!
This allowed me to do a test I've been meaning to for ages, since playing the game with a mouse sucks ass and using the button option for aiming also does because of having only 8 directions and it being slow, what if I controlled it with my drawing tablet?
At first it went badly because:
- The tablet area covering the whole screen made it so anytime it got outside the 3ds bottom screen range the input just didn't work
- The game relies heavily on the circle pad sensitivity for dashing, dodging, strafing and etc., and it has a stamina limit so even with a modifier it doesn't work well.
So then I tried configuring my tablet to limit itself to a specific area of the screen when I'm using citra, and then used my Xbox controller for the analog and shoulder button and yeah it felt right at home! You can watch a demo of this replay here:
There's some getting used to, mainly because of how I'm used to the drawing tablet's usability. So things like flicking and stopping aren't that intuitive at first, and you might notice in the video some points where I forget about doing it. It's par for the course when emulating games with controllers they weren't designed for. However, by using this controller scheme i feel like it's just a matter of getting used to rather than frustratingly hard and impossible to learn as it would be with a keyboard+mouse. Also has the added bonus of not being that strainous on the hands which was the major complaint about playing it on the 3ds!
Anyways I'll keep playing this now that Vulkan allows my weak graphics card to run this game well. The resolution boost also enhances it quite a lot (though you can't see it on the video because of the compression I had to add), the game already looked stunning on the 3DS! I'll miss the 3d effect though........
I'll report back with my thoughts
