The author is also trans, and she spent the first volume or so feeling conflicted on talking about gender issues since she feared yuri fans would get mad if Rae's reading became trans because the author herself is trans.

In Love With the Villainess is one of the most explicitly queer light novels out there!

I didn't know about her being trans that's super cool! But I did know about the problems on the first volume, when she said on twitter she feels a bit apprehensive about public reception of new adaptations/localizations of the series because of how it's more contentious in expressing its queerness

When I read the first volume last year I felt a bit disappointed because the writing really showed Inori got more in her but it would fall flat there (like the student protest arc resolving in "it was a bad guy inciting it all the time" which is a trope I really dislike), but reading Vol 2 it really shows less restraint and REALLY goes places and I'm loving every page
