Current Hyperfixation: Wizard of Oz

  • He/Him

I use outdated technology just for fun, listen to crappy music, and watch a lot of horror movies. Expect posts about These Things. I talk a lot.

Check tags like Star Trek Archive and Media Piracy to find things I share for others.

Two weeks ago (whoops) I posted I'd gotten into minidisc. The post does stand well on its own, but I realized the next day I'd forgotten a critical component: why?

Whoops!

Some writing meta follows but here are some of the central ideas for my MiniDisc interest:

  • MiniDisc is Good, Interesting Technology
  • It's Changed How I Consume Music
  • It has Extremely High Alt-Retro Futurism Value
  • There's An Incredibly Interesting Story There

Putting this all together in a cogent way has been a struggle, and I think a big reason for that is there is just so much of it. Each of those points spawned at least two or three separate points worth at least a couple hundred words, and that's daunting to both write and read. MiniDisc isn't a "single blog post" hobby for me -- it's a "large section on my web site" and "major way I interact with Music as another interest and hobby", which takes more than a single blog post.

Which.... for now, I suppose, let's just consider all of this Cory's Goal On Here. This will end up being a series of posts about different vintage computing, tech, history, futurism, music and cultural ideas I have rattling around in my brain.

I've been "doing" "vintage" computing for over 20 years and it's been in the past few few years that a lot of what attracts me to vintage computing and communications has really started to click. Most of that isn't directly minidisc related, but a lot of the ideas cross over to both.

So... there it is! Expect a post probably every week or so with some aspect of this all. It's tempting to try to sit down and write everything about all of this down all at once, but that would be very difficult to write as well as consume, so ultimately I'm hoping this format will be better for both of us.

My apologies, again, for building this up so much, and thank you for your patience as I end up generating more writing meta than actual minidisc content.
