A Sony Mavica was on my wishlist for a while now and a week ago one popped up on ebay for an acceptable price. I had to gather some additional components, like an usb floppy drive and a new battery. On Sunday I was able to try it out.
And it's actually a nice camera to use. A bit bulky, but because it's made of plastic it's pretty light. The floppy drive is not that loud. The screen is ok, the menu has all the options I consider required. It was fun taking shots with this.
The results are a bit more mixed, but that's for a next post.
Sony Mavica (2023)
The results from the camera are... interesting. The 640x480 resolution from the sensor is not great, exposure latitude feels narrow, though the colors are fine. But it seems to me that the jpeg compression is really doing the photos no favors.
The downsides are a bit recoverable with some tweaks in Lightroom, so I got a bunch of decent shots to show.
I think street photography is not the strongest use of this camera. I think a series in liminal spaces, or a lan party would do it more justice.
