Current Hyperfixation: Wizard of Oz

  • He/Him

I use outdated technology just for fun, listen to crappy music, and watch a lot of horror movies. Expect posts about These Things. I talk a lot.

Check tags like Star Trek Archive and Media Piracy to find things I share for others.

It's one of the special features from the 2022 release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I shared it to my Telegram channel a few weeks back already, but I wanted more people to see it because it's just a fascinating glimpse into the kind of technical, mechanical, optical, and practical wizardry that used to go into doing even the most simple effects in films.

If I ever became a filmmaker (unlikely) I'd insist on doing shit like this. Sure, we can do the compositing and editing on a computer, I'll cede that ground, but I want everything that appears onscreen to be filmed. When you watch stuff like this, you realize how really just about any visual effect in the world can be achieved with enough ingenuity.

In a similar vein, there was a DVD extra on WALL-E where Ben Burtt really went deep on the history of sound design and using everything from screen doors, to coiled springs, to army generators to make sounds for movies throughout film history.

Ben Burtt also having done the sound on Stars Wars back in the day.

You can do so much without ever touching a computer.
