Current Hyperfixation: Wizard of Oz

I use outdated technology just for fun, listen to crappy music, and watch a lot of horror movies. Expect posts about These Things. I talk a lot.

Check tags like Star Trek Archive and Media Piracy to find things I share for others.

Look at this monstrosity. You know where I absolutely don't need minimalism? A remote control, an object with one of the most consistent design languages for expressing a wide array of functionally-distinct buttons in a compact space. This heinous little fucker doesn't even have skip scene buttons, let alone eject, top menu, or any of the other sundry utilities that have been standard on DVD remotes for decades.

What does it have instead? Brands. Four of the most abominable media services on the planet adorn the largest, most visible buttons on this thing, just begging to get accidentally pressed when you least want to be yanked into Netflix hell. Dollars to donuts you can't configure those, either. I love to pay thirty dollars to get advertised to.

Look at that! So many buttons, and all of them serve a purpose! It even duplicates all the OG buttons from a regular game controller so you can do everything you need to with it, in case they somehow left anything out (which it doesn't look like they did).

How far we have fallen.

in reply to @nex3's post:

I keep thinking about how in The Diamond Age (1995), the reason that one guy got invited to be a part of the Neo-Victorian Aristocracy society was because he invented adding banner ads to disposable chopsticks. I really wish less things reminded me of that, but it keeps happening.

Obviously there have been a lot of developments and decisions that have led us to this execrable state of affairs, but personally, first and foremost, I blame Apple for this.

our new tv came with one of these and it IMMEDIATELY fell into the cracks of the couch from which it can never be returned... luckily the remote for the old TV worked still (they also have a pretty dreadful app remote)
