that i decided to see how hard it would be to make my own. so here is my attempt at corrected (grammar, language, and timing) subs for Darkplace episode 1: Once Upon A Beginning. subtitles are in srt and thus should work in most standard video players.

i do plan to continue with these but not sure on what schedule. it is bonkers to me that there are no good subtitles for this show and it deserves far better.

edit: updated ep 1's subtitles to fix a few things that were bugging me, link here is updated.

Dantefix subtitles available here (opensubtitles).

Patchnotes (for this entire project in general but definitely for this episode):

  • Primary goal here was to better match the line pickups with the subtitle timing, which was fucking atrocious.
  • tried to remove a lot of the onomatopoeia stuff when it was superfluous/unfunny/hard to time
  • attempted as best as possible to not ruin jokes in the subtitles. there were a lot of ruined jokes in the default subtitles, since they were often off-timed or included punchlines too early.
  • normalized all "offscreen dialogue" (including thoughts) as italics. Should stick to this going forward, but sorry in advance that it isn't that way in ep 1. i might redo e1 later now that I have a better overall "grammar" for this.
  • When possible, split "multi-dialogue" subtitles into multiple lines, mostly because they usually spoiled jokes when they were together.

Each one of these takes me ~an hour, so somewhere like 3x the length of the actual episode. It's not nothing, but it's also kind of relaxing in the sense that you can't really focus on anything but this. Anyway, please enjoy

All the same notes from above apply. You would not believe how much doing this project makes me loathe official subtitles! I cannot believe this shit was distributed to the masses in this quality.

If opensubtitles is down (as it is right now as I post this, lmao) here's a google drive folder with all the current completed subs: Enjoy

This one went a bit faster due to a lack of dialogue for a lot of the back half. Still, cleaned up as best as I could.

IT IS FINISHED!!! All 6 episodes done. Please enjoy the fruits of my labor and no longer get really annoyed at the timing & typos in the official subtitles. I did it

Makes sense honestly if it was shot on video - which I believe it was, to solidify That Look. It seems all the big blu-ray publishers forcibly upscale native SD content to HD with awful smoothing etc. because otherwise you'd get videophiles screeching that they got ripped off because their blu-ray isn't in HD and ISN'T THAT WHAT BLU-RAY IS SUPPOSED TO BE
